August - Shifting Seasons
What have we done my forefathers and me?
What can be done against the rising sea?
What were we thinking when we had not a care?
Is there any way back from these times of despair?
Some say “OK, it’s just a natural peak;
Or a trough, in need of statistical tweak.”
Others insist it will pass or reverse –
Is there any way back, will it only get worse?
But I say look, listen and smell,
We’re in August; see the leaves have already fell.
Blackberries are ripe, swallows have flown.
Is there any way back, if only we’d known!
August, for which she is nothing but blameless,
Has transported herself - adjusting her status,
No longer Summer but Autumn, she reasons!
Is there any way back, from this shifting of seasons?
I fear not!
Men argue. Nature acts.
